Some of you may be aware by now that I have returned home to sunny Doncaster and I am sure you are all excited by that fact. Unfortunately I am going to have to break all your hearts again as it wont be for long and when I leave it will probably be for quite a long chunk of time.

I’m sure a few of you are wondering why I am back and why I didn’t tell you earlier and that can all be summed up in 2 words: “Promise” and “Surprise”.

Promise
Before I left home all those many moons ago one of my closest friends asked me something important. He asked me to be the God father to his daughter and that to me is a real honour. I have known Patrick for just over 10 years now and in that time we have worked together, lived together and practically become brothers. I treat him and love him as I would a brother I am so happy that he asked me to be God Father. Of course I said yes to him as in the first draft of “Dan’s big plans” I was only supposed to be away for 3 months and then back home to try and be an adult again. This hasn’t exactly worked out as planned (for the better) and now I want to keep on travelling the world to see what is out there for me what life has to offer. This passion for travel left me in a bit of a predicament as I had made a commitment to be somewhere and a promise is something I take very seriously.

In the grand scheme of things this is one massively expensive way to keep a promise, involving 2 buses, 3 planes and a train (one way) and 43hrs of travelling just to get home. I wont even go into how much it has cost as I don’t want to think about it but it is safe to say that by the time I get back to New Zealand I will be looking for a job and eating instant noodles until I get one! That being said, the money doesn’t really matter. I mean yeah, its hard to get and it could have been used to do so many other things.. but its just money. It comes, it goes and I can always make more some day. What I cant do is relive the day at a later date or break a promise to a best friend when I have the means and capabilities to keep it. That just isn’t me.

I know some people will think me stupid for it and think that it is a massive waste of time and resources to come back but that is who I am and the type of thing I would do. I hope all of my fiends know that I would do the same crazy mission for any of you if I needed too (and that I also expect you lot to do it back if things to really wrong for me!)

Surprise
The second reason that I am back is for the surprise. Yes it would have been easy to let everyone know that I am coming back home for a few weeks and it would have let people plan free time and all that sort of stuff but I think my way is far more fun. As far as everyone is concerned I was not going to be coming home and was even going to spend my 30th Birthday away from home in who knows where. When the idea set in that I was going to be coming home it started to feel like it would be a lot more fun to convince people I wasn’t and then just turn up rather than let them know that I was on my way. The first bonus of this is that when I first get home I will be able to have a full nights sleep without anyone bugging me since 43hrs on the road (or rather in the air) certainly takes its toll. The next bonus is that I could then systematically turn up at peoples houses unannounced to scare and surprise them and hopefully see some joyful faces and smiles from people that have missed not seeing me in 4 months (if they exist)

With the help of Cunni we planned to get a few people at a certain times in as creative ways as possible and also wanted to get it on film. Obviously we succeeded and I will get some of the videos online in the next few days to you can see peoples reactions.

Anyway as you now all know I am home and will be bumming about, living the unemployed life for a few weeks so if anyone fancies meeting up for a coffee and a catchup my slate is currently empty and welcoming of distraction. Get the time now as I can’t promise when the next time is that I will be back (for realises this time!)
