…It turns out that disappointment tastes exactly the same as crappy Chinese food.

After out epic day missioning around Milford Sound we decided it would be a good idea to get something to eat in Queenstown before making the extra hour drive back to Wanaka. After taking a look at a few places we decided to go for a Chinese at a place called Mandarin Palace, a decision that we would soon come to regret.

We should have realised early on that things were not going to be quite right when we ordered our starters and mains and they said to us “The mains might be out before the starters as they could take us longer to cook”. We looked on bemused by this but just nodded as we were hungry. After a stupidly long wait (of which we almost walked out) the food finally started to arrive in dribs and drabs and this is where the true disappointment kicked in. The starters didn’t look too appetising to begin with and didn’t taste much better than they looked. The “calamari rings” also turned out to be disgusting looking tentacles with a rubbery taste and no flavour at all.

When our sweet and sour pork came out we were excited to have something with some flavour since it was covered in sauce but that was not to be. Even covered with sauce the dish was still bland and tasteless leaving us with a $99 dollar meal (as we refused to pay for the squid) that tasted of pure disappointment.

Luckily for us we headed to the cookie bar to drown our sorrows in tasty milkshakes and warm cookies that did take the edge off our anger.

Best day ever finished off by worst meal ever!
