On Sunday night a few of us decided to head down the the night market in Phuket’s old town. This night market is one of the biggest around and has loads of offer we thought we would go and take a look and see what was going on as a few people wanted to get presents for friends before they returned home.

night marketWhen we arrived we realised how big the place was and that is was packed with people, most of which were trying to sell us everything they had for a great deal. After a bit of walking and some haggling Rhi got some thing she wanted, however Hani just couldn’t manage to get the ornament he wanted no matter how hard he tried to haggle or all the different stores he tried so he ended leaving a bit annoyed with the whole situation.

The night markets are great places to pick up clothes or trinkets from your stay and also excellent if you want to try the local cuisine first hand and direct. There is a huge area that is dedicated to cooking food and there are plenty of weird and wonderful things on offer, most of which I didn’t have a clue what they were. Since my stomach hasn’t been too reliable the last few days I decided to abstain from trying the local delicacies but that didn’t stop Alex and Hani from digging in to all they could get.

On the way home we did a bit more bargaining and ended uprave taxi getting a little rave taxi since there were 5 of us try and fit into a car. These mini van conversions zoom up and down all of the time with music blasting and lights flashing and are the Thai equivalent of a black cab. We must have looked quite rocky when we got in as all of a sudden the driver started playing Metallica which lead to an impromptu rock out by all of us.

When we got back we went to a local store called Nommys which sell frozen yoghurt for a little bit of cheeky desert, the idea being that frozen yoghurt isn’t nearly as bad as icecream. I have to say that that nommyplace is onto a winner as it is low in fat and tastes great, exactly what you need for a street full of health concious people who want to treat themselves!

It was only a short trip but another successful little trip for our little group who’s members seem to grow and change all the time. I’m going to miss this place when I leave but I guess that is the curse of travelling and the trade off for going new places and meeting new people.
