Being on a tropical Island may seem like a dream come true for most, however some people are not aware of some of the issues that are faced in island life. Lets list a few of the pitfalls
- Sand is hot – That might not seem like much of an issue but in the middle of the day the sand is hot enough to burn your feet and leave you running for the sea. There is no point leaving your flip flops on either as that just means you cant run properly and flick sand everywhere so it just slows you down.
- Toilet paper is an optional extra – Most bars have toilets that are just the bowl and no real plumbing. A lot of the time there is no toilet paper in sight and you have to improvise with napkins. The flush system then involves a bucket of water to pour down it. There are also plenty of creepy crawlies in there to keep you on your toes.
- There are no walls – Most hostels or little bungalows on the island have wooden walls that are open on the top before the roof to try and give some airflow. This helps a little with the heat but it also means that if some drunk noisy people get in at 3am they will wake you up even if they whisper… then they don’t shut up until about 5am!
- Retarded Roosters – I always thought that Roosters made noise in the morning to “bring in the day” but it turns out that that information has not yet reached the Cambodian Island of Koh Rong. Here the Roosters make their noise whenever they like, usually at about 1am and carry on going all night just for the hell of it.
This information is not me complaining, it is just me trying to give you guys a fuller picture of what happens behind the scenesĀ of the beautiful beach pictures with the white sands so you feel slightly better about being at home working.
When it gets down to the wire though I would certainly rather be on my adventure than living the life I did before.
Bring on the Roosters!
At least when you get back to civilisation you will really appreciate indoor plumbing. Should have taken Scott’s top travel tip to heart. Always pack your own soft andrex toilet paper. Even packs it when going to good hotels just to be on safe side. First thing in his bag when packing lol xxxxx
Oh don’t you worry. I still have the roll I left home with!
Love it xx
